Last week I was happy to head down to the tiny little Dorset village of Worth Matravers for the gorgeous summer country wedding of Gemma & Chris.
Unfortunately, no one bothered to invite the sunshine… They managed to avoid a lot of the rain that was lashing the rest of the county, but when I arrived at the church everything was looking decidedly damp and foggy.
But such is the Great British Summer, and everyone simply took the weather in their stride, of course. As the guests began to arrive the weather was simply a matter for laughing at, and the damp August fog ended up being the perfect foil for the brilliant sunflowers and bright cheerfulness of the whole wedding party.
After the traditional ceremony in the tiny Church of St Nicholas of Myra, and a couple of family shots in the little public garden on the village green, Gemma & Chris asked if we could head down to the cliff top. The stroll through the quiet misty lanes was beautiful, and the clifftop was dramatically wild. Although all signs of the sea were hidden in the rolling bank of fog, it was still a perfect spot for a few quiet minutes alone together.
Then it was back to the Square & Compass where a marquee in the garden was ready and waiting; what a fabulously relaxed and cosy reception. The marquee was filled with bright wild flowers, in loose vintage arrangements which totally suited the day. Seating was simple blankets thrown over straw bales, arranged around tables made from pallets. The hog roast and salad continued the rustic country theme, and the trestle tables were groaning under the array of cakes the guests had baked for the evening reception. The weather brightened enough for a few to brave the dampness for some garden games outside before the first of the bands started to play.
